The potential form (can) かのうけい

The potential form says what you can do: よめます, “I can read it”. It keeps ます, the way the course teaches it. A few verbs, like あります and わかります, have no “can” form, so they are not in this step.

Ⅰグループ 【-iます】

The i sound becomes an e sound, then ます.

i becomes e+ます

  • よみますreadbecomes よめます
  • かきますwritebecomes かけます
  • かいますbuybecomes かえます
  • はなしますspeakbecomes はなせます

Ⅱグループ 【-eます】

Swap ます for られます.

  • -e masu+られます
  • たべますeatbecomes たべられます
  • ねますsleepbecomes ねられます
  • あげますgivebecomes あげられます
  • みますi sound, but Group 2!becomes みられます

★ Watch out みます has an i sound before ます (み), but it is Group 2 — like おきます and います. So: みます → みられます.

Ⅲグループ 【します・きます】

Learn these two. Noun + します changes like します.

  • します★ Special!becomes できます× しられます
  • きます★ Special!becomes こられます× きられます
  • べんきょうしますstudybecomes べんきょうできます

★ Special rule します → できます — never しられます · きます → こられます — never きられます. Learn these by heart.
