A few things about kanji
Kanji connect a written shape with meaning. The same character can have different readings in different words.
訓読み · Kun’yomi
Readings from Japanese words connected to the character’s meaning.
一つ → ひとつ one thing
音読み · On’yomi
Readings based on sounds borrowed from Chinese long ago and adapted into Japanese.
一 → イチ いち · one
Dictionaries often list on’yomi in katakana and kun’yomi in hiragana. In Read, we write all whole-word readings in hiragana. Learn the reading together with each whole word. You do not need to memorise every reading at once.
とめ・はね・はらい · Three stroke endings
Watch where the pen stops, flicks, or lifts away. These enlarged diagrams show the movement at the end of a stroke.
とめ · Stop
Finish the stroke with a controlled stop.
はね · Flick
Finish with a short flick in the direction shown.
はらい · Sweep
Ease off as you move, making the end taper.
Follow the handwritten model in Meet. Printed fonts may look different, and small differences do not automatically make a character wrong.
