VERB FORMS · STEP 7 OF 7

The conditional form (if) じょうけんけい

ば says “if …”: ゆっくり はなせば、わかります, “If you speak slowly, I understand.” Verbs start from the ます form; adjectives and nouns start from the word itself.

Ⅰグループ 【-iます】

The i sound becomes an e sound, then ば.

i becomes e+ば

  • よみますreadbecomes よめば
  • いきますgobecomes いけば
  • かいますbuybecomes かえば

Ⅱグループ 【-eます】

Swap ます for れば.

  • -e masu+れば
  • たべますeatbecomes たべれば
  • ねますsleepbecomes ねれば
  • あげますgivebecomes あげれば
  • みますi sound, but Group 2!becomes みれば

★ Watch out みます has an i sound before ます (み), but it is Group 2 — like おきます and います. So: みます → みれば.

Ⅲグループ 【します・きます】

Learn these two. Noun + します changes like します.

  • します★ Special!becomes すれば× しれば
  • きます★ Special!becomes くれば× きれば
  • べんきょうしますstudybecomes べんきょうすれば

★ Special rule します → すれば — never しれば · きます → くれば — never きれば. Learn these by heart.

い-adjectives 【-い】

Swap the last い for ければ.

  • い+ければ

いい → よければ.

  • たかいexpensive, highbecomes たかければ
  • いいgoodbecomes よければ

な-adjectives and nouns 【+なら】

Add なら.

なら is not ば, but it also means “if”.

  • しずかquietbecomes しずかなら
  • あめrainbecomes あめなら
