Every verb form starts with one question: which group is this verb in? Look at the sound just before ます.
Ⅰグループ
In front of “ます”i

- はなします
Ⅱグループ
In front of “ます”e
- たべます
- ねます
- あげます
- わすれます
An i sound, but Group 2: learn these by heart.
