The dictionary form じしょけい

The dictionary form is the form you find in a dictionary, and the casual way to say ます. Take off ます, then change the end:

Ⅰグループ 【-iます】

The i sound becomes a u sound.

i becomes u

  • のみますdrinkbecomes のむ
  • かいますbuybecomes かう
  • まちますwaitbecomes まつ
  • はなしますspeakbecomes はなす

Ⅱグループ 【-eます】

Just swap ます for る.

  • -e masu+る
  • たべますeatbecomes たべる
  • ねますsleepbecomes ねる
  • あげますgivebecomes あげる
  • みますi sound, but Group 2!becomes みる

★ Watch out みます has an i sound before ます (み), but it is Group 2 — like おきます and います. So: みます → みる.

Ⅲグループ 【します・きます】

Learn these two. Noun + します changes like します.

  • しますdobecomes する
  • きます★ Special!becomes くる× きる
  • べんきょうしますstudybecomes べんきょうする

★ Special rule きます → くる — never きる. Only this one verb.
