How to read the chart
Each row is one consonant and each column is one vowel, so the character where “k” meets “a” is said “ka”. The order of the vowels is always a, i, u, e, o. The first row, marked “–”, is the five vowels on their own. The last row, “n”, is a single character: the only consonant that stands alone.
A few sounds are not spelled the way the pattern suggests. On the first page, watch “shi”, “chi”, “tsu” and “fu”. On the second page, watch “ji”, and the blended sounds “sha”, “cha” and “ja”, which are written without a “y”.
The letter at the start of a row opens the lesson for that row, with stroke order, audio and words to read.
How to use it
Print the chart with romaji and keep it beside you while you learn. When a row starts to feel easy, press “Hide romaji” and print again: now it is a test sheet. Say each character out loud, or write the romaji in by hand.
