けいごkeigonoun

polite/formal language; honorifics

日本語のけいごは難しいです。Keigo in Japanese is difficult.

そんけいごsonkeigonoun

honorific speech (used to show respect for others)

先生にはそんけいごをつかいます。We use honorific speech for teachers.

けんじょうごkenjougonoun

humble speech (used when speaking about oneself to show modesty)

自分のことを話すとき、県じょうごをつかいます。We use humble speech when talking about ourselves.

ていねいごteinigonoun

polite speech (general politeness using ます/です forms)

しらないひとにはていねいごをつかいましょう。Let's use polite speech with people we don't know.

いらっしゃるirassharuverb

to be / to go / to come (honorific)

先生は教室にいらっしゃいます。The teacher is in the classroom. (honorific)

おっしゃるossharuverb

to say (honorific)

先生がおっしゃったことをおぼえています。I remember what the teacher said. (honorific)

めしあがるmeshiagaruverb

to eat / to drink (honorific)

おきゃくさまはもうめしあがりましたか。Has the guest already eaten? (honorific)

もうすmousuverb

to say (humble)

わたくしはたなかともうします。I am called Tanaka. (humble)

まいるmairuverb

to go / to come (humble)

明日そちらにまいります。I will come there tomorrow. (humble)

いたすitasuverb

to do (humble)

よろしくお願いいたします。I humbly ask for your favor.

ごぞんじgozonjiexpression

knowing; being aware of (honorific use)

田中さんをごぞんじですか。Do you know Mr. Tanaka? (honorific)

よろしいyoroshiiadjective

good; alright; fine (polite form of いい)

こちらの席でよろしいですか。Is this seat alright for you?
